Free design mentorship: where to get it, and how to make it count

ADPList offers free sessions from a large open directory. Hop, by Design Buddies, offers free 1:1 sessions from most of its hand-reviewed mentors plus free weekly group sessions, with an application to join. Design communities and your own network are the other two reliable sources.

ADPList

Free, huge, open to everyone. Best for exploring many mentors quickly. Expect popular mentors to be booked out, and bring your own structure.

Hop (by Design Buddies)

Free 1:1 sessions from most mentors, plus free live group sessions every week. Application-only and reviewed by hand, so the people you meet are vetted and the sessions actually happen. Some mentors also offer paid deep-dives.

Design communities

Design Buddies, local meetups, and Slack groups often run office hours or mentor threads. Free, informal, and hit-or-miss.

Your own network

A former manager or a senior designer you admire. Ask for one specific 30 minutes, not "to be your mentor."

Questions people ask

Is free mentorship as good as paid?

For a first conversation, a portfolio gut-check, or a career question, free is usually enough. Paid sessions earn their price for high-effort work: a full portfolio teardown with written notes, a mock interview with a scoring rubric, or a multi-session plan. Start free, pay when the work needs it.

How do I make a free 30-minute session count?

Send one sentence on what you're stuck on before the call, one link, and one question you want answered. Take notes during, write your next steps after, and book the second session before the momentum fades. Mentors give more to people who show up prepared.
