How do I return to design after a career break?

Lead with what you did, not with the gap. Rebuild one case study on a current tool stack, write a two-line explanation of the break that you're comfortable saying out loud, and start with conversations rather than applications: a returning designer's first three interviews should come from people, not job boards.

The gap matters less to hiring managers than returners fear, as long as the portfolio is current. What ages is the craft and the tools. A four-week project in Figma with a real problem, finished and written up, closes most of the distance.

Say the break in one sentence, then move on. "I took two years for family and came back in March" is a complete answer. The interviewer wants to know you're ready now, not why you left.

  • My career has spanned a bunch of situations including being laid off, passed over for promotion, had imposter syndrome, been the first or only designer, survived multiple re-orgs at big and small companies. I will pull from my real experience rather than speaking in generalizations.
